School History was Made

For the first time in school history, the San Jose Academy High (SJHS) Lady Bulldogs won the West Valley League Division in track and Field, in an undefeated regular season. Coached by JoAnna Gistand (sprints, hurdles, jumps, distance), Cameron Kolk (sprints), Bruce Jones (general admin), and Danielle McGuiness (throws), there were several notable performances in which helped to clinch the title.

Aside from the competitive times, the background behind this historic victory is a reminder of the hard work and dedication put forth by the athletes, despite resource challenges. Fundraising efforts, donations and support from the boosters keeps many of the athletic teams afloat during season, including the track team.  Inside the SJHS track shed you will can find secondhand equipment from neighboring schools: the hurdles were a gift from Independence High School, tape measures from Gunderson, and etc, however, what can also be found are the hours of summer training, personal drive, and carefully crafted coaching that goes beyond what new equipment can provide.

There are number of beneficial attributes which come with sports, one a key attribute SJHS coaches hit home is accountability. Individual athletes are chosen for invitational and league meets based on attitude, attendance, and athletic ability. Coaches instill the standard of ‘never letting down your teammate.’ Meaning everyone should always give their best during workouts, in their performances and their behavior inside and outside of school. Setting these standards, though strict to some of the athletes, is what fosters a culture of perseverance, accountability, and were attributes to their league victory.

Next season, the San Jose lady bulldogs plan to focus on developing  in the throws and distance events. To follow along with the bulldogs, please connect with them on athletic.net.
